The most inexpensive way to good health...

Handwashing!

"Schools and handwashing promotion go hand in hand!"

"Schools Across the County Promote Handwashing!"

Our national school system is our country's first line of defense against the spread of disease germs!  Let's face it, in order for students to attend school, they must me healthy!  To keep our children healthy, schools across the country are involved in handwashing initiatives from kindergarten all the way up to grade 12.

It's Germ Warfare in the Trenches

Consider this fact:   According to the Association of Christian Teachers and Schools,  22 million school days are missed each year due to the common cold!     This doesn't include days missed from other kinds of germ related illnesses!  So schools are learning to fight back by advocating handwashing campaigns from the youngest students to the oldest.

                 Forces Behind Schools and Handwashing

One Powerful Force: The CDS or Center for Disease Control encourages schools to have an on-going program that teaches and encourages handwashing. They constantly send news releases across the country like the one below:

Educational Material From the CDS

The Center of Disease Control fights an endless battle to get schools to promote handwashing. Here is one of their bulletins:

"Keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. It is best to wash your hands with soap and clean running water for 20 seconds. However, if soap and clean water are not available, use an alcohol-based product to clean your hands. Alcohol-based hand rubs significantly reduce the number of germs on skin and are fast acting."

When washing hands with soap and water:
Wet your hands with clean running water and apply soap. Use warm water if it is available.
Rub hands together to make a lather and scrub all surfaces.
Continue rubbing hands for 20 seconds. Need a timer? Imagine singing "Happy Birthday" twice through to a friend!
Rinse hands well under running water
Dry your hands using a paper towel or air dryer. If possible, use your paper towel to turn off the faucet

Remember: If soap and water are not available, use alcohol-based gel to clean hands.

Another Powerful Source That Results in Handwashing

Initiatives in Schools are News Stories like the ones below:

Providence , R.I. - More than 20,000 Rhode Island students who missed classes last week because of a health scare returned to school Monday to a basic lesson they've heard before: Keep your hands clean.

Schools in Warwick, West Warwick and Coventry had been closed Thursday and Friday while health officials investigated several cases of encephalitis and meningitis.

To help prevent the spread of illness, the state doled out almost 10,000 gallons of hand sanitizer, said Elliot Kreiger, a Department of Education spokesman.

West Warwick Senior High principal Wayne Talbot said workers at his school spent the better part of Sunday installing hand-sanitizing stations in each classroom

  • "The availability of hand sanitizer has cut down on the spread of colds at Transfiguration School in West Hazleton, Pennsylvania, according to principal Sherry Ambrose."

  • "In Arlington, Virginia, schools used to rely on parents to supply sanitizer gel, but now the district has installed hand-sanitizer dispensers in all classrooms and made large supplies of the gel available. "Now when children are coming in from recess or going to lunch without time for a restroom break, they get a squirt of the gel," said Lolli Haws, principal at Arlington's Oakridge Elementary School"
