                    "Handwashing Techniques That Work"

Handwashing techniques may vary, but there are certain criteria that are essential to doing a quality job.   Here are a few descriptions of various handwashing techniques.

Handwashing Techniques

      1.   The wrong way:   Rinse hands under a running faucet for 5 or 10 seconds without using hand soap.  (Poor  Results)

     2.      The right way:

•  Rinse hands under a running water and then place soap in your palm. 
• Now scrub your hands together working the soap around the finger nails, the back of the hands, around the fingers, and up to the wrist.  Do this away from the running water working the soap into a lather.
•  Work the soap around for around 15 seconds and then rinse the soap clear of your hands.
• Drying hands on paper towels is highly recommended especially in a child care center
• Cloth towels need to be laundered regularly

    3.  When soap and water are not available, one of the alcohol based products like Purell will do the trick.  (There is debate about these products in that they may be responsible for the creation of super-germs.  If there is nothing else available, it is still recommended.)

    Reminder:  For the average person, 15 seconds of handwashing seems like a long time.  It really isn't.  If you ever watch ER or some other medical show, you will witness doctors scrubbing their hands for over 60 seconds!
